How to Determine the Value of Emerald?
All the colored Gemstones like Emerald and Diamond are graded using four parameters known as
“The Four Cs”: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat weight.
1). Color
In Gemology (Science of Natural and Artificial Gemstones) color is divided into three components: hue (Color Scheme), saturation (Color defined by combination of light intensity and how it is distributed across spectrum of different wavelength), and tone. Emeralds occur in hues ranging from yellow-green to blue-green, with the primary hue necessarily being Dark green. Yellow and blue are the normal secondary hues found in emeralds. The finest emeralds are approximately 75% tone on a scale where 0% tone is colorless and 100% is opaque black. In addition, a fine emerald will be saturated and have a hue that is bright (vivid). Gray is the normal saturation modifier or mask found in emeralds; a grayish-green hue is a dull-green hue.
2). Clarity-
Emeralds tend to have various inclusions and surface-breaking fissures (Fractures on the surface). With inclusions, Emeralds have foggy appearance that helps in defining the value of the Emerald, Foggy appearance are usually low in price. Emeralds also have some dark spots inside, that reduces the clarity and price of stone.
Stones that lack surface breaking fissures are extremely rare and therefore almost all emeralds are treated ("oiled") to enhance the apparent clarity.
Eye-clean stones of a vivid primary green hue, with no more than 15% of any secondary hue or combination (either blue or yellow) of a medium-dark tone, command the highest prices. The relative non-uniformity motivates the cutting of emeralds in cabochon (Gemstone that has been Shaped and Polished as opposed to Faceted (Cut), that usually a convex (rounded) obverse with a flat reverse) form, rather than faceted shapes. Faceted emeralds are most commonly given an oval cut, or the signature emerald cut, a rectangular cut with facets around the top edge.
Treatment- Most Emeralds are oiled as part of the post-lapidary process, to fill in surface-reaching cracks so that clarity and stability are improved. The least expensive emeralds are often treated with epoxy resins, which are effective for filling stones with many fractures.
3).Cut-
The cut of an emerald plays a crucial role in its overall appearance and value. A well-cut emerald will maximize its color and clarity, while a poorly cut emerald may appear dull or even flawed. The precision of the cut, including depth, table percentage, and symmetry, significantly impacts the stone's brilliance and price
4). Carat Weight-
Emerald or any color stone’s price is significantly determined by carat weight. Generally, larger emeralds (higher carat weight) command higher prices due to their rarity and less mining.
💡Another Factor that Determines is the mining Location
Emeralds are found in Brazil, Ethiopia, Zambia, Colombia, Afghanistan and Russia.
The most expensive and Best Emeralds are found in Colombia, Zambia and Afghanistan (Panjshir).
How to identify the Emerald Belongs to which mine?
Brazil- They are Yellowish green, This characteristic is emphasised by the lighter tone of Brazilian emeralds, which allows more light into the precious stone.
